The Pends, St Andrews in the snow, 1878 (JV-303-B). A coloured postcard from the James Valentine Photographic Collection.
This view is particularly interesting to local residents as it shows the gateway to Priory House which used to be located inside the grounds of the cathedral. The Pends was the gatehouse to the Priory. Pend is a traditional Scottish word meaning arch or vault.
Valentines of Dundee produced prints and then postcards of topographical views for the emerging tourist market from the 1860s until the 1960s. Coloured postcards were printed using three coloured and one black printing blocks to produce the desired colours.
