December 4 – Margaret Scott Gatty, Seaweed, c.1850-1880

Margaret Scott Gatty, a children’s author and writer on marine biology, published British Sea Weeds in 1863.

In the Libraries and Museums collections are some of Gatty’s albums of marine botanical specimens, such as the seaweed specimen shown here (ID: ms38224/4).

Gatty’s husband Reverend Alfred Gatty was cousin to Charles Henry Gatty, the benefactor of the Gatty Marine Laboratory in St Andrews which opened in 1892.
