In Greek mythology the Cyclopes were giant one-eyed creatures. The brothers Brontes (thunder), Steropes (lightning) and Arges (thunderbolt) in Hesiod’s Theogony provide Zeus with the thunderbolt. The most well-known cyclops is Polyphemus, defeated by Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey.
This woodcut is taken from Hartmann Schedel’s Liber Chronicarum known as the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493) which is an illustrated history of the world.
