December 6 – Rock and Spindle, c.1860

The Rock and Spindle, a well-known rock formation at the eastern edge of the St Andrews bay and a feature of the local coastline, was captured by photographer Thomas Rodger in this photograph, c.1860 [ID: ALB-2-221].

Thomas Rodger, a University of St Andrews graduate, was the first professional photographer in St Andrews. His studio was in St Mary’s Place, now used as the careers centre.
