December 7 – Aquatilium animalium historiae, 1554

This cute fella is from Salviani’s Aquatilium animalium historiae. Hippolito Salviani (1514-1572) published Aquatilium animalium historiae in Rome in 1554. Salviani’s work describes species of fish and molluscs from around the Mediterranean Sea, based on the specimens he acquired in the fish markets in Rome.

The work includes engravings by engraver and cartography Antoine Lafréry (1512–1577).
