A St Andrews calendar on the theme of oceans wouldn’t be complete without mention of the Gatty Marine Lab. The original timber building was built in 1892, with the more permanent building opening in 1896. Both buildings were funded by zoologist Charles Henry Gatty. The first director of the lab was William Carmichael McIntosh.
A new Gatty Marine Laboratory was built to house the Scottish Oceans Institute of the University and was officially opened in 2019.
