December 13 – The Challenger expedition

The Challenger expedition of 1872-1876 travelled nearly 70,000 nautical mile around the globe and is considered a key milestone in the beginnings of modern oceanography. The expedition, led by John Murray and Charles Wyville Thompson, aimed to explore the ocean’s depths.

The scientific results of the expedition were published in an extensive series of volumes which included many illustrations of the scientific instruments used and sea-creatures such as this plate showing an octopus. The Report on the scientific results of the voyage of H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1873-76 under the command of Captain George S. Nares and the late Captain Frank Tourle Thomson was published between 1880 and 1895.
