George Brettingham Sowerby II (1812-1884) came from an extended family of natural historians, illustrators and conchologists.
The Thesaurus Conchyliorum, a comprehensive work on molluscs, was started by George Sowerby I (1788-1854) and continued by his son Sowerby II (1812-1884) and grandson George Sowerby III (1843-1921).
George Brettingham Sowerby II also published a number of his own works, including A conchological manual in 1839.
